What do those e-bikes get up to? Another good ride….

There was a low turn-out at HQ today, as many of the Wheelers were taking part in one of the Armed Forces Cycling Challenges – 100k on a square shaped route from Pendennis castle, or a 25m on/off road event.  After discussing the amazing scenes in Falmouth yesterday, six of us set off; Trevor, Sonjia, Barbara, Mike, Dave and myself – four e-bikes and two road bikes.  Charlie joined us at the Argal crossroads, making five e-bikes.  The destination for coffee was Porthlevan with our route over there via Halvasso, round Stithians on the west side, Penmarth, Nine Maidens Down, and along the B3280 – long and flat, and despite low cloud, the visibility was excellent and you could see the north coast clearly.  Along that road two weeks ago, we had stopped to talk to a bunch of guys on the first day of their LEJOG, and we wondered how they got on…

We crossed onto a long, quiet back road to via Crowan – more great views – then Nancegollan, Breage, and over to the coast road at Rinsey, before speeding down into Porthlevan.  Harbour View cafe was very busy but our orders arrived quickly, and as usual the cakes were excellent – above average.  Our route home this time was round the back of Helston, via Coverack Bridges and onto the B3217, across to the A394, where we intended to go left after the layby, but the road was closed in that direction because of the West Cornwall Car Show at the Wendron CC.  So it was back to the main road, and some crazy overtaking by stupid speed merchants.  It was a relief to turn left at the Rame PO and join the quiet lanes before a short bit of the main road again and turning off for Halvasso.  Four of the group opted for another coffee at Via Ferrata, while Mike, Charlie and myself headed home.  A very good ride with just one rain shower in the Helston area – coats on, coats off! then sunshine for the rest of the way back.                    42 miles for me                       Liz
