Today’s OGIL built slowly from four riders at Union Corner, to six by the top of Halvasso. The slightly chilly North Westerly wind determined a destination on the North coast and Portreath quickly became the favoured option.
The 50/50 split of conventional and sparkies was handled well and as a group we rode steadily through Rame, Penmarth and Nine Maidens as we made our way to Barripper. The usual amount of on road banter was added to at the regular stops, which allowed people to take on fluids and take off clothes (we’d all over dressed!).
Continuing through Penponds, Camborne West and South Tehidy we made our way through Tehidy Woods and down the big hill into Portreath. A table for seven (Amanda had joined us) at the Pod and a combination of counter and table service saw us sated with coffee and a variety of ciabatta rolls, salmon on bagels, toast and marmalade (50p extra!).
Amanda set off on her own and the six OGIL decided to take advantage of the tail wind and to ride pretty much straight for Falmouth. The usual split (traffic/traffic lights) through Redruth was resolved by a regrouping at the top of Lanner Hill where we had another fleeting glimpse of Amanda as she caught the back markers on the Sandy Lane roundabout.
Nothing to report from Redruth to Falmouth as our six became five and then four on our way past Flicker, through Argal Farm and back to Union Corner.
Another nice OGIL that started chilly, warmed up and included a very small amount of light drizzle. Great to see Ian, Mike, Mike C, Dave, Steve and for us to ride in a way that kept the group together, safe and having fun.
43 miles and 3,500 ft of climbing for me.
