October Meeting

October Meeting Here we are again, another month on and the meetings are sadly still in written form and we are not meeting as a group in Woodlane Social Club. There was hope that this would be the month that would see us back together again and it’s not looking too hopeful for November or December either but more about that later. As usual we’ve all been busy despite the current restrictions. Clive and I even managed to get away […] Read More

Slow train to nowhere

Miss Mollys 281020

OGIL ride 28 October 2020 Dean had another brilliant idea for a destination – Julia’s café at Camborne station. Probably not the most attractive of venues, but with poor weather forecast the idea of sitting inside in the warm trumped any concerns about the aesthetics of the place. With a full complement of six at Union Corner, we set off to test the nice new tarmac on Hillhead Road. We were not disappointed, and on reaching the Other Place waved […] Read More

The day that the Raines came down

We were 15 going on 16 on Tuesday evening; as good as it gets for any OGIL ride; but Mystic Meg literally put a damper on things over night – “Its going to be Wet, Wet, Wet” and our fair weather friends found other more interesting things to do. Colin hasn’t quite worked out what a winter bike is for, and after last weeks comment about “light weights” made early use of his Wimp card. It was raining, there was […] Read More

Backwards to Gwithian

Portreath beach

OGIL ride Wednesday 14th October 2020 It was a lovely sunny but chilly morning as the appointed group gathered at Union Corner. The WhatsApp chaos of last week had, for some reason, not recurred, so the group membership had been decided in a fairly orderly manner, overseen by Papa Dean. Everyone was in longs except for Iron Legs Kath, who claims to still be swimming in the sea in just her neoprene bikini. Us wimps were attired in near full […] Read More

Feel free away day around Penwith

With no Audax or Pathfinder rides this year I thought I’d try and whip up some enthusiasm for an away day ride where a different starting place would give us an opportunity to cycle on different roads…. how many more times can you go up Halvasso? So, with a favourable forecast and many messages later, five of the OGILs I usually cycle with planned to meet at the lay-by just past the Chinese restaurant near Perranuthnoe at 9.30 to make […] Read More

Where’s my chain gone?

Chain off

OGIL ride Wednesday 7th October 2020 With the Rule of Six becoming a reality, the usual method of organising the OGIL rides of everyone turning up at Union Corner or the Other Place and then debating what the destination should be and what route we should take obviously cannot continue. But the default replacement method of using the OGIL WhatsApp group to negotiate numbers etc was clearly not ideal. Simon noted a total of 60 messages on the group about […] Read More

A wet and muddy Marathon Sunday

The forecast was looking grim but with 45,000 people participating in the virtual London marathon I thought I ought venture out. If they can get out there so can I. Jan was taking part and her finish line was Portreath so I decided to use my old mountain bike and go down the Bissoe trail. It wasn’t raining for most of the ride on the way there, just a few lovely puddles to ride through. As I arrived at Portreath […] Read More

Award Nomination

I’ve received the email below from Julie Rand of Cycling UK regarding our recent article regarding our Lockdown activities.  As a club it would be fantastic if we won an award though it is a privilege to be nominated and we should be very proud to have received the nomination. Hi Kath I’m very pleased to let you know that your group has been nominated for a Cycling UK Going the Extra Mile: Lockdown Love Award 2020 for maintaining group morale and […] Read More

September Meeting

Kath is away this week so she’s asked me to do the ‘website meeting’ – which should have been our last one!  We were all looking forward to the opening of Wood Lane Social Club next month, and holding our first real live get-together in seven months on October 29th, and a Pathfinder on 18th, but sadly, these are impossible now, with the new Covid rules banning more than six meeting in groups.  Cycling UK’s advice, updated on Sept 14th, […] Read More

Portreath-in-Roseland

OGIL ride Wednesday 23rd September, 2020 Dean’s bid for Ruan Highlanes as a destination met with general approval from the Team Union Corner, despite the necessity of having a pound for the King Harry Ferry (the feel of loose change weighing down the pockets is now but a distant memory). A trip to the Roseland is but a rare event in the life of the average OGIL.  But the Met Office had other ideas, and the forecast rapidly deteriorated as […] Read More
