Le Grande Sa Copotatos

Le Grande Sa Copotatos – but sadly no more social climbing!

How our worlds have shrunk! However, providing that the great dictator Boris doesn’t close us down completely, we can still ride our bikes. But it has to be alone! That is unless you live with someone who can keep up with you – or you ride a tandem like Margaret and Martyn.

I think that everyone would agree that it is hugely important to limit the pressure we put on the NHS. So probably best to keep our rides fairly local – certainly within the distance of being retrieved, under whatever circumstances, by a loved one or friend.

A few of us had planned on being in Mallorca next month – clearly that isn’t going to happen. It was also going to be a bit of a challenge for me this year as I had great ambitions to take the Strava 65/69 yr old category KOM on the iconic Sa Calobra! I’m currently third. And to add to the disappointment I’ve been informed that the Dartmoor Classic has been cancelled!

There are really good short routes in Falmouth and around the headland, beaches and outlying villages. But there is also excellent cycling too to be found on the “island” of Mylor! ( I’ve often seen Mylor and Flushing as being an island as we’re surrounded by water – and main roads! )

So I’ve given myself a new challenge setting a very demanding hilly route locally. There are eight or more climbs around Mylor and together I am calling them “Le Grande Sa Copotatos” ( on account of all the early spuds on the roads around here! ). And the training is both demanding and safe in that it tends to be ridden at very slow speeds!

So, hoping we see an end to these restrictions before too long, maybe we can enjoy our own “Island” challenge later in the year! Once the restrictions are lifted I hope to fine tune the route and post it on Strava. Meanwhile let’s all take extra care when we are out on our bikes.
