Six to the Crate

Today saw the biggest crowd of Wheelers at HQ in a very long time – 30 of us, brought out by a beautiful Sunday morning – but we soon dispersed into four groups, with six of us – Sonjia, Sheila, Jo, Christine, Amy and myself deciding on a visit to the Crate, via Gweek. We took the usual route, with Jo and Christine mostly leading, Sheila up at the front on her snazzy new electric steed; Sonjia, who says she’s unfit from months away from cycling, but can still wizz up a hill; Amy who’s currently bothered by a painful knee but managed very well, and me, somewhere in the middle. It was one of those days when you’re too hot one minute, then the sun goes behind a cloud, or you’re in the shade, and it’s really cold…
Down to Gweek, right opposite the boatyard, and a long climb…Sheila was heard to say “this is so easy….” any e-person who makes comments like that can’t complain if we make nasty remarks about cheating!! So it was left at the top, and down to the Sainsbury’s roundabout, turn right, along the cycle path and back towards the A394. Down Muddy (now Dusty) lane, and half way along, to where The Crate was in full swing – Sonjia, Sheila and Amy, who’d never been there before, were suitably impressed. Excellent coffee and cake, very cheerful friendly service from the ladies in the cafe/hut, and we even got a table for six right next to the field of small donkeys. The Flicka Foundation at Mabe is currently extremely busy with newly rescued donkeys, so some of the healthy ones are fostered out to suitable homes.
We continued to the main road, decided to take the Poldark route rather than over to the 394, then the usual way home via Porkellis, Carnkie and Halvasso. Christine left us at the Argal crossroads and we all went our different ways at Union Corner. A very enjoyable ride at a comfortable pace – 30 miles for me. Liz
