Seven to Chapel Porth on G7 Sunday

Well, it was eight at the beginning and five by the time we got home…. With Trevor leading, Don M, Barbara, Denise, new rider Jess, Jo, Adrian and myself decided on Chapel Porth, so we headed out of Falmouth, up Truro Hill and through Perranwell, to avoid the main road while it was so busy. Along to Chacewater and under the viaduct to Blackwater, where Adrian left us as he had things to do at home, and on through Mount Hawke to Chapel Porth. Both car parks were full, there was traffic everwhere, but it’s no problem if you’re on a bike! The queue for food at the cafe moved along quickly and we even got a free table for seven. Are we still only supposed to sit six together?? Well, no one seems to care anymore… After getting a group photo on Denise’s phone taken by a helpful visitor, it was back up the hill in the hot midday sun, and left at the top to go round St Agnes Beacon. The energetic six went down a steep hill to admire the view from St Agnes head, while I relaxed by the roadside, knowing that the climb back up would be hard work, and the route was hilly enough as it was! The climbers were rewarded with ice cream in St Agnes, then we started to head for home via some interesting short cuts and the long road to Carnon Downs. Several helicopters flew over in a north-easterly direction – delegates returning to Newquay from the G7 in Carbis Bay? At the chapel-which-is-now-a-mosque (?) we turned right, down over the ford – still with plenty of water flowing – and up via Grenna lane to Perranwell, where three left us to head for Stithians. Jess had an appointment for her first Covid vaccine and wasn’t sure where the showground was, so Don and Denise, in true helpful Wheeler’s spirit, offered to escort her*. Jess had made nothing of the hills and could soon be riding with a faster group. So we were down to five, (I make it four, Ed) to finish the last few miles into Falmouth afer a very enjoyable ride. 40 miles for me. Liz

(* Liz did not know that the other three had gone to the pub!)
