Due to not riding regularly I departed from Helston earlier than I normally would of done for this annual ride but with a strong breeze pushing me up a relatively traffic free Sithney Common hill I soon turned off the main road onto past childhood roads. Reminiscing with the associated memories as I pedalled pass my place of birth I just wished I had my usual “lights” riding buddy alongside me talking bollocks. Any thoughts of the past were soon […] Read More
OGIL ride report 15th December 2021 Rumours had been circulating for some time that Dean the Elder had invested in a new electric bike, and we were keen with anticipation as he rode up to us at Union Corner with his bike bristling with technology. We were disappointed, though, to find that he was in fact riding his trusty old steed, but with a front light and a camera attached to his handlebars. He assured us that the camera was […] Read More
Very sadly, our Christmas Party and Awards night was cancelled due to the Covid/Omicron situation. Apologies and thanks to everyone who had made or bought food for the event; hopefully it won’t all go to waste. The awards will be presented when we’re next able to get together. On a happier note, after a very successful Audax back in September, our charity fund was able to give donations to two local charities. ‘Hidden Help’, nominated by Ian, organises and obtains […] Read More
Big crowd gathered at headquarters; lots of yellow in expectation of a big downpour. Thankfully it never materialised and asides the wind, the temperature was pretty toasty for this time of year. Porthleven was quickly decided on as our destination, and a fast group soon shot off (Ian, Robin, Phil B, Danny, Amanda and Damien) only to be seen again briefly at the Harbour View before they headed across the harbour to another cafe in search of some indoor space. I was going to entitle this ‘Just us Girls’ but seeing as there appears to be a race on and feeling a little competitive I joined the race for 2nd place. Us girls consisted of Paula,Liz,Christine,Jo,Sheila and myself and the decision was made to go to Miss Mollys. Porthleven was mentioned but I’m not sure why that was dismissed. It may have been so that we could get back to watch the last Grand Prix of the season which started […] Read More
OGIL ride report 8th December 2021 As usual, we stopped at the bottom of the hill from Halvasso to bid farewell to our illustrious Chairman, who insisted then on broaching the subject of who was going to write the ride report for today (Sunday). We all agreed that the last person to arrive at the stopping point would draw the short straw, in full knowledge that Martin and Margaret were not there. After a while it dawned on us that […] Read More
Always keen to keep the fire of adventure burning I suggested heading east and some new lanes this week. Julian had agreed to guide us through the roads less ridden in the clay country aiming for coffee at Wheal Martyn. However, the barmy weather of earlier in the week had given way to a chilly northern wind accompanied by unexpected showers and this had the immediate impact of weakening what little resolve some wheelers had. Including our guide Julian! But […] Read More
To be fair it was a slightly miserable forecast, a good chance of rain and cold winds, but there were a couple of new excuses to avoid the weather – running away to Newcastle was good but my favourite was “doing porridge”, although the author of that one managed to break out and join the gang, a slippery customer!! Even our new joiner Steve (of shorts and tee shirt persuasion) was put off by the weather. Three met at UC, […] Read More
The weather wasn’t looking good for Sunday’s ride, it was a cold northern wind with the possibility of showers. I didn’t expect to see so many turn up at HQ. We broke into 2 groups one going to Perranporth and the other slower group going in the direction of Porthleven. So heading off to Perranporth we’re 10 cycles with 11 cyclists, you can work that out yourselves. We headed up Treluswell and turned off to head across to Carclew. We […] Read More
There were 13 on today’s OGIL ride, but without Fred’s leadership not one of them offered to write the report. Many years ago the Wednesday morning ride was a small informal group, including Fred and President Gunner, who went out with the idea that they would “see where this lane goes”. When I was allowed to join them, and started writing reports, which often wandered from the truth as much as we wandered form the original route, other members got […] Read More
