We had hoped to be back at Wood Lane Social Club for our July meeting, but it’s not available yet, so please meet at Queen Mary garden, Falmouth, at 7pm on Thursday 29th.
OGIL ride 14th July 2021 Those of us waiting at UC were treated to a visit from not one but two Denises on their electrically assisted steeds. They declined to join us as they were on their way to Stithians to experience a previously unexplored road that had apparently been discovered in the vicinity. Someone had better tell Ian about this. We departed very slightly late due to this diversion, and met up with the rest of the crew at […] Read More
It was just Sonjia and me – everyone else who usually turns up for the slower OGILS ride on Wednesdays had something else going on – and Sonjia suggested Helston boating lake. Anything was fine by me as long as we got some climbing in (preparing for the Sportive on Sunday) and you can’t go far out of Falmouth without climbing…so we went the usual route via Gweek and the Sainsbury’s roundabout, down to the lake, and had coffee there. On Sunday morning via WhatsApp I again asked our resident Weatherman, Damien, what the weather would be like. He came back and said it would be wet. Well, he wasn’t wrong. I don’t usually ride in the rain but needing to get a few more miles into my legs in preparation for the Coast to Clay I ventured out. There were more hardy souls at HQ and we gathered in our familiar groups. Without the likes of Fred, Phil 1 […] Read More
I had always considered myself a runner but I started cycling with the Falmouth Wheelers in 2009. I was suffering with increasing knee and hip pain during my preparation for the Tresco Marathon and I believed cycling might help relieve the pressure on my joints. It was the tenth and last marathon to be held in the Scilly’s and it was always held on the same day as the London marathon, though, with seven laps of the island and seven […] Read More
Well, I looked out at the heavy rain at 7.15 a.m. and put a WhatsApp message out asking if anyone had a better weather report on their phone than I had. Damien came back and said it would be dry by 9. That was good enough for me though it was pouring down as I got my bike out and was still raining as I made my way to HQ. Lo and behold, it had stopped by the time we […] Read More
As the Tour de France is upon us, Here are ten questions relating to Le Tour. Where did Stage 3 of the 2014 Le Tour start? In this year’s Le Tour the team Astana-Premier Tech is based in which country? What nationality is Thomas de Gendt of Lotto Soudal? Joop Zoetemelk won Le Tour in 1980; which was his team? Which rider from Luxembourg won Le Tour in 1958? Stage 14 of the 2021 Le Tour finishes in Quillan – […] Read More
It’s getting harder. I know that 200K is not a lot for some Wheelers, but it’s enough for me, especially when you haven’t ridden more that 80k since last years. It was nice starting out that hour earlier, when the air was cooler and it was good to get back before it was really dark, its just the middle bit. 13 started out, 12 triple OGILers and a groupie, with Ben and Charlie bringing the average age down a bit […] Read More
From the top of Halvasso the OGILS broke up into two groups, I found myself with Fred, Kath, Phil3, SteveL, Dean and Jan. Porthtowen was the target and off we went down to Greek Church where a car driver decided they had to beep their horn at the front of the group and then again at Kath at the back who was accused of taking up too much room. I think we had just met Mrs.Toad of Toad Hall! No […] Read More
Once again our meeting was held in Queen Mary gardens, Falmouth, with a good turn out of members. Apologies were received from Jan, Denise, Barbara, and Robin. Fred chaired the meeting and the first topic was the Pathfinder this coming Sunday from Longrock, or Halvasso if you’re cycling down. Please be at the start for 9.45 am. The Cycle Campaign Ride has been moved from July 3rd to 31st due to the restrictions, and will from Falmouth Town station, round […] Read More
