Crash, Splash and a Dash

Weather forecasts eh, not worth a jot! Six intrepids gathered at UC. There would have been more but for a handful of dissenters with valid alternative arrangements (or maybe they’d taken note of the forecast, wisely!) Attendees included Amy who arrived debating the merit of wearing two pairs of socks and whether they should be tucked inside or worn outside the leggings. There were several helpful hints but the fact that she was wearing two pairs at all gives you […] Read More

Wednesday 5th May

We all met at Union Corner at 9.30am. Paula, Eliz, Sheila, Sonjia, Myself and Don. One brave man taking all us ladies out. We all decided to go to Portreath, heading for Halvasso, onto Crane garage, Stithians, Mount Ambrose; across the railway track to keep off the busy roads. Wheal Plenty, Mawla, Elm Farm, and down to Portreath.  It was a very cold and windy ride, so a well deserved hot drinks and bacon baps. Jane, Don, and myself went […] Read More

Phil’s Bench – does it deserve listed status?

OGIL ride 5th May 2021 Six of us assembled at Union Corner, all well insulated from the cold wind with the exception of Dean who seemed to think that wearing an old pair of shorts would be warmer. Still, as seems to be our way now we set off without really thinking about where we were going, other than to head to the Other Place, where we joined up with the four waiting there to form a quorum of ten […] Read More

What name was shared by the Royal Navy’s last battleship and a car from the Standard Motor Company? Taraxacum Officinalis is the Latin name for which very common British wild flower? Newark, Stoke and Burton are towns on which river? In which county is the town of Rickmansworth? Which of these birds is not a member of the Thrush family: Fieldfare, Robin, Blackbird, Dunnock and Redwing? Charles Hubert Hastings are the first names of which composer? Wembley Park, Baker Street, […] Read More

The Long Ride – catching up. Don’t the weeks fly by!

We went to Newquay on the 18th April. Philby, (Phil B 🥴) Ian, Amanda and Sylvia joined me and my trusty ordnance survey maps (loaded on my phone) on a magical mystery tour of the back lanes beyond Fraddon – off piste and new lanes even for Ian! I’d researched a cafe open near the harbour but the queue and lack of anywhere to sit prompted us to try our luck in Perranporth. Then Ian remembered the cafe in Crantock […] Read More

United we stand …

OGIL ride 28 April 2021 The crew assembling at Union Corner were blessed with a double visitation this week – both Adrian and the hairy man stopped for a chat before racing off to meet their compatriots at the Other Place. We were few in number, and the threat of rain throughout the morning from the forecast cemented a popular decision to head for our wet weather venue of choice – Miss Molly’s, despite the obvious drawback that we wouldn’t […] Read More

Ten to Perranuthnoe

One look at the huge turn out of Wheelers this morning was enough to tell anyone unfamiliar with cycling that they might just be missing out on something. Bikes and riders of all kinds and abilities eager for a day out on two wheels. It’s not easy to pin down what’s so wonderful about riding a bicycle – it’s not just the sense of freedom and independence or being out in the fresh air – and I’m sure we all […] Read More

Chairman’s delight

How truly pleasing it was to see so many Wheelers gathered at HQ this morning; over 30 I am led to believe. It was nice to see so many old and new faces I think we could have stayed chattering for an hour at least but we came to ride so ride we must. Groups sorted them selves out; Robin took a group to Moushole; Trevor took a sizeable group to Hells mouth; Liz and the girls set off for […] Read More

Six to the Crate

Today saw the biggest crowd of Wheelers at HQ in a very long time – 30 of us, brought out by a beautiful Sunday morning – but we soon dispersed into four groups, with six of us – Sonjia, Sheila, Jo, Christine, Amy and myself deciding on a visit to the Crate, via Gweek. We took the usual route, with Jo and Christine mostly leading, Sheila up at the front on her snazzy new electric steed; Sonjia, who says she’s […] Read More

Report on the April zoom meeting

The Wheeler’s Zoom meeting last night  was the final one in that form – the next  two will be open air picnics, and then we get back to Wood Lane Social Club after a break of well over a year. 12 members joined the meeting last night, chaired by Fred.  We were all pleased to hear that Wood Lane will be open and welcoming everyone from July 1st, after an extensive refurbishment, so our meeting, as  usual, will be on […] Read More
