Something’s not right

The scene: a table in Jenn’s Diner, just outside Redruth. We had just ridden there by the most direct route according to Ian, which involved taking turnings never before explored so that we could tackle as many long and steep hills as can be found in these parts short of starting with an abseil over a north coast cliff. A mere 40km to Redruth and we didn’t even get to see the sea. But sitting there getting stuck into our […] Read More

Pathfinder Up the Fal 22nd September 2019

Ten punctual bikes and riders set off from the Tresillian layby at 10am, with one more bike squeaking onto the tail end of the peloton just before the first junction. So then we were 12: Robin and Ian (our leaders/sweepers), Simon, Amanda, Fred, Phils 1 and 4, Dave F, Sonjia, Liz and ourselves. Robin and Ian had promised roads less ridden. The route started up the Probus bypass – then took a left turn towards Trelowthas, re-emerging on the bypass […] Read More

Thanks

Many thanks to Paul and Hilary for hosting last nights Hill Climb. Unfortunately the weather was against us keeping the numbers lower than expected but there was still a crowd gathered in their kitchen afterwards tucking into delicious burgers followed by still warm apple cake, flapjacks and plenty of tea. A great fun event.

Soggy to Porthleven

A not quite dozen of us congregated at the other place in the gloom and mizzle.  A few regulars had absented themselves, apparently on the grounds that they were preparing themselves for the evening hill climb.  I can fully appreciate that a three minute effort later in the day might require a whole day’s rest to really do it justice.  Looking around, there was clearly considerable disparity in individuals’ assessment of the weather we were likely to encounter, judging by […] Read More

The long Sunday ride Sept 1st

Phil C showed little interest in returning to the wonderful cafe we stumbled across in Lostwithiel – that served massive portions of organic scrambled eggs and artisan toast. (I’d missed out on that delicious looking breakfast previously so felt we had to return.) Phil B is away so I expected the group to be just Ian, Amanda, Chris and myself. But Martyn was keen to join us and Beth too. Ray is here on holiday, as was Malcolm, and both […] Read More

Portreath Politics

The first OGIL ride of the autumn took place on a beautiful September day. It was a bit breezy and we had one shower to deal with but overall it was a great day. It wasn’t however without its problems. It took place on one of the most turbulent days in our recent political history and we soon found out how difficult such times can be. Our European delegate – Jan Watson – was heading off for Nice later that […] Read More

No feeling in my fingers …

…. No feeling in my toes. Yes, you are right. This week’s OGIL ride was Wet, Wet, Wet. Won’t be much I thought, and with the warm weather we have had recently, wearing my Night Vision, all weather coat, from Evans Cycles, would be a bit over the top. My lightweight ‘plastic bag” would suffice. How wrong I was. But I was not alone; Martyn, Phil1, Paul and Kiwi Dave, at Union Corner and Simon, Phil3, Mike2, Andrew, Trevor and […] Read More

Nought to Culdrose in 26 minutes – OGIL ride 21.08.19

It must have been the promise of a rare dry day that brought everyone out, and we had to use two sets of fingers to count the 16 that assembled at the Halvasso turn. The usual lively debate about destination ensued, interspersed with conversation on other irrelevant topics that prolonged the decision making process. After dismissing most of West Cornwall on the grounds that someone or other had been there in the last six weeks, a sort of consensus settled […] Read More
