Adrian says,
‘I wanted to read a few passages from ‘The Escape Artist’, one of my favourite cycling books, because for me Matt Seaton evokes the essence of what it’s like to be on a bike: descending in free fall, resisting touching the brakes or labouring up an incline, legs burning on a cold winter’s morning. He writes about his obsession with cycling and the rigours of amateur racing in the ‘90s, living in south London and riding down into Kent on roads, all familiar to me from my time as a student in the early ‘80s. Ultimately, the book ends in tragedy with the terminal illness of his wife and the demands of family life bringing his racing career to an end. It’s a very personal and honest account of what turns out to be a traumatic period of his life with cycling at it’s core. He’s now re-married is living in New York and still rides his bike’.
