You never regret going. 15th March

This was said to me a long time ago after a hard ride or was it a wet ride? Can’t remember. It has been repeated several times since and I must admit it is true. Well O.K., it gets very close to the “maybe not such a good idea” sometimes. Anyway today’s OGIL ride could easily fall into the category of (not sure). Last week with a dismal outlook only two of us turned up, We got wet. This week […] Read More

Are we crazy or what?!

It was 9.25am, and raining as I waited alone at Union Corner.  I’d just passed Kath going in the other direction (home?) and I was sure no one was coming, Just as I was thinking about doing the Mawnan circuit and going home, Don, Denise and Sonjia arrived.  Denise said they were going to Truro, ‘something different’.  Sounded interesting so I tagged along.  Don had the route worked out on his Garmin – Truro hill (thank goodness I’m now on […] Read More

Let us eat Cake: OGIL Ride 8 March 2023.

The forecast was a bit grim, or at least it was on Tuesday. So, when Wednesday came it was still a surprise when nobody except Chairman Fred and a past Chair appeared at the other place. Are we becoming slaves to the forecast which is still not always right? The benefit was that no time was spent blocking the road while we decided on a café. Miss Molly’s it was but on a long curve allowing for a speedy shortcut […] Read More

A Local Legend

With a less than favourable weather forecast, 20% chance of rain increasing to 80% at noon, the accepted view was keep close to home; so, a suggestion of “Stithians” seemed reasonable. However, the devil is in the detail, or in this case, the route to Stithians. “Via Gweek”, again sounded reasonable, I had completed a route based on those two points fairly recently. It was the first day out for my Christmas present rain coat, the old faithful, Alturam Night […] Read More

Perranuthnoe why not

Sunday dawned dry but chilly but at least it wasn’t windy so a plus there. A good turnout of the trusty (sparkys) electric assist bikes who headed off for the Milk Barn Mullion under the carefull guidence of Trevor (Red leader). Thirteen other riders set off for Perranuthnoe but three ( Danny, Adrian and Colin) decided to go to Bissoe for the launch of the St Pirans ladies cycling team. The usual route was followed Porthkellis Nancegollan etc. All arrived […] Read More

What bike rack?

Ride report 1st March 2023 On a sunny Sunday morning, the OGILs cycle club set off from Union Corner for a ride to Stithians Lake. After encountering a large lorry reversing into a farmyard, the group paused briefly at ToP to decide on a new, more circuitous route through Gweek, Coverack Bridges, and Releath. As they cycled towards Stithians Lake, the group faced a challenging headwind from Black Rock to Four Lanes, but they supported each other and persevered through […] Read More

To P or not to P. Ride report 26 Feb.

It was a cold clear morning with a brisk easterly breeze. Two groups formed at HQ; Trevor’s group heading for Porthleven the other to Portreath. The usual OGIL route was followed to Carmenellis, Baripper, Coombe, then a push into head winds along north cliffs. The Alantic cafe was bulging at the seams – why I don’t know; a long wait ensued – 2 hours in fact. Oh well it was warm. Robin and Ben left before the rest of us, […] Read More

Nothing can stop the Wheelers

Ride report 19th February 2023 It was the perfect plan. Give the Wednesday OGIL rides a miss, and my role as official report scribe can be avoided. However, I had not reckoned with our wily Chairman, who collared me on Sunday and insisted that I write a report for that day instead. Oh well, here goes then. A veritable multitude of riders assembled at HQ, presumably coaxed out of hibernation by the promise of a still, dry day for a […] Read More
